Designing your kitchen cabinets should be carefully planned. There are a lot of things to consider in making a layout of your plan. You should remember that in order to have a good plan of your cabinet designs, you need to all factors to make the end product a success.
The first step in making your very own custom cabinets is to know how you utilize your kitchen. You have to fully consider the number of people using your kitchen. With this, you will be able to identify how many persons would more likely use your kitchen cabinets at the same time. How large your kitchen cabinets would be depend on the traffic load of people using the whole area at the same time.
Another thing you should consider in your cabinet design is the number of cook working on your kitchen. You have to know if they use the kitchen at the same time, so you would be able to know how much extra space you need to consider in designing the your kitchen custom cabinets and if there is a need for you to add an extra sink.
Also, you need to consider if you hold events and gatheringsvery often. If you are a person who loves to throw out parties and gatherings, then you might want to have a cabinet design that combines your kitchen with your living room. This will let you entertain your guests while working on your kitchen.
You also need to take a look at the usual activities held in your kitchen. You might want a wet bar or a breakfast bar if most people loves to eat or drink near the area. If you want to do your laundry near your kitchen, then why not design laundry room cabinets? Or perhaps you need a desk to work at your kitchen? This is perfect for those who loves grab something to eat while working.
Moreover, there are special kitchen needs that you need to pay attention to. You need to consider the needs of those who use your kitchen in making your cabinet designs. You might try to see if your cabinet design is appropriate for those short or tall people who works for a long period of time, and for the disabled or elderly members in your home.
Next thing that you need to do is to plan the features which should be included on your kitchen cabinet designs. You also need to consider quite a few things.
You need to know if there’s a need for you to include a peninsula, an island, or a breakfast nook in your kitchen cabinets. Of course, you also have to know if you still have a room for it.
You will also need to decide if you need to fill a kitchen pantry. Then identify if an enameled cast iron sink or a stainless steel sink would suit with your need. Also, know if you need a microwave for major cooking or just for heating stuffs.
In addition, you need to consider your preference in cooking if you plan your cabinet design. You need to know if you prefer cooking with the use of electricity or gas. Some people would actually cook using a cooktop with a wall oven and some with a combination oven-and-range.
Actually, your budget depends on the structural and mechanical changes that you make on your modern kitchen cabinets. But it doesn’t mean that you will be spending a lot for the total project. You can consult a licensed professional to help you in making cabinet designs and making your final decision.
In order for you to get an idea on how much you will be spending for the project you can follow this guideline below:
First, identify if you are moving a load-bearing wall? These bearings support the structure of the house. An interior load-bearing wall runs the length of the house that makes up the center of the structure. It is difficult even for a professional to move a load-bearing wall, especially if they are built in cabinets.
In addition, you also have to know what rooms are directly above and below the kitchen cabinets. This is important because it might be difficult to reroute plumbing pipes and you will need this information from a plumber services to reroute the pipes. Heating ducts and electrical wires once there are rooms above and below which are already finished.
Next step is to think about the styles that would suit your taste. Collect all kitchen magazines and features that you have available, check out articles online, and construct you own idea about the best design for your white kitchen cabinets. But, remember that it also needs to blend with your kitchen or home. Try constructing ideas to have to come up with the best style for your Kraftmaid cabinets.
You might also want to check what colors would best fit with the whole kitchen area. In choosing colors, you need to know if it would perfectly blend with its surrounding. Try experimenting with different color combination to find the perfect blend that would match the area.
Lastly, you might want to consider your budget with other related renovation project that you might want to do in your home. You can actually save a lot if you plan projects like designing bathroom cabinets together with your cabinet designs and do the remodeling at the same time.
Cabinet Designs: The Process
Kitchens are actually designed or planned according to the four work centers. Each center is essentially planned well in order to come up with a good working area.
The first one is what we call as “The Cleanup Center”. It’s actually the area where the sink is located and it should have at least 18″-30″ size on one side and 48″-54″ size on the other. This is to allow enough space to stack dishes, pans and utensils. You also need to give at least 12″ space between the nearest corner and the sink.
Another one is what we call “The Cooking Center”. Literally, this is the area or space where you cook. It is ideal that you set a 12″ minimum on one side of the range, and 15″-24″ on the other side. We also have to set a 12″ minimum to the nearest corner. In addition, we have to set at least 15″ to 18″ counter space on the right side for our microwaves and built-in ovens.
Next, we have “The Storage Center”. You should set a space of 15″-18″ around the refrigerator which also includes the handle side of the refrigerator, where you set food.
Lastly, we need to set at least 42″-84″ of free counter space for “The Mixing or Preparation Center”. The area should be comfortable enough to handle your pans, bowls and utensils.
If you have more space to use, you can include an additional of 36″-84″ of free counter space to set bowls and pans as your serving center. This is not as important as the four mentioned above, but serving center would make your area much unique. Be sure you plan your cabinet design well.
Cabinet Designs: Planning Clearances
You might also want to plan for the following minimum clearances as you design your area so that you’ll have some space to work around.
First, you need to have at least 42″ clearance from the nearest table or island in your kitchen to the front edge of the counter top.
Next, loading and unloading items are very essential when you use your kitchen that is why you need to have at least 20″ clearance from the front edge of the dishwasher door to the nearest obstruction on that area. Give at least 26″ clearance between the nearest traffic path and your kitchen work area.
Lastly, allow a clearance of 36″ between the eating table and the nearest obstructions. This is very important so that there is still room to pull the chair away from the table.
Kitchen Layouts: Categories
Most Kitchen layouts are based on a “Work Triangle” concept. This concept consists of imaginary lines which connect the sink, the refrigerator and the range. Designers see to it that the three legs of work triangle should have a total of 23-26 feet in order to have a maximum efficiency and comfort in working on that area.
There are actually a variety of known layouts in kitchen cabinet designs today, but actually these layouts came from only four kitchen layouts which include the U-shaped, the corridor, the L-shaped, and the one-wall or gallery layout.
Base Cabinets: Four Basic Types
A base cabinet design has four basic type. First, it can be a standard base cabinet with one drawer and a door or shelves below. Next, it could be a drawer base cabinet that has around three to four stacked drawers. It could be a sink base cabinet which is open below, with a single false drawer at front and a door below. Lastly, it can be a corner base which fits in a corner.
